01BUSINESS & ACCOUNTING FOUNDATIONSFollow the transaction through the ERP
Understand the event before you analyse the number.
Follow the transaction through the ERP
Understand the event before you analyse the number.
Use the Odoo training company to connect purchases, inventory, sales and payments with the accounts they affect. Establish the difference between an order, a physical movement, an invoice and a cash settlement.
What you explore
- Chart of accounts, debit and credit, P&L flows and balance sheet positions.
- Purchase order → goods receipt → supplier bill → supplier payment.
- Sales order → delivery → customer invoice → collection.
- Posting dates, company context, stock quantities and the chosen inventory valuation method.
Trace one product through buying and selling. Annotate the linked documents and explain each journal entry.
Your checkpointExplain why a confirmed order does not prove an invoice was posted, and why cash received is not automatically revenue earned.
02EXCEL, POWER QUERY & DATA QUALITYTurn source data into reliable inputs
Connect, clean and check before you calculate.
Turn source data into reliable inputs
Connect, clean and check before you calculate.
Bring together ERP extracts and Excel planning tables using a repeatable preparation process. Understand the meaning of one row in every source and preserve enough detail to investigate differences.
What you explore
- Source tables, named Excel tables, reusable parameters and explicit data types.
- How Odoo data reaches Power BI, including refresh and access requirements.
- Date conversion, missing keys, duplicated records, unmapped accounts and incomplete joins.
- Full-table counts and exception logs, beyond the first rows shown in a preview.
Build a source register, repair a date-conversion issue and reconcile the loaded records with the source.
Your checkpointShow why a repair is correct and repeatable, rather than hiding a problem by deleting error rows.
03DATA MODELLING & DAXBuild the financial reporting model
Make relationships, measures and filters work together.
Build the financial reporting model
Make relationships, measures and filters work together.
Organise transactions and reference tables into a model that supports consistent finance reporting. Learn how account mappings, dates and entity filters change the result.
What you explore
- Facts and dimensions: ledger lines, accounts, calendar, entity, product and cost centre.
- Unique keys, relationship direction and avoiding duplicated financial amounts.
- Explicit DAX measures for revenue, cost of goods sold, gross profit, operating expenses and operating profit.
- Ledger signs versus reporting signs, calculated subtotals and drill-through to supporting detail.
Build a five-line management P&L and compare one entity with the complete reporting group.
Your checkpointReconcile totals with the ledger and demonstrate that account, date and company selections produce the intended result.
04WORKING CAPITAL & REPORTINGConnect profit, cash and open balances
Understand what remains unpaid and what is held in stock.
Connect profit, cash and open balances
Understand what remains unpaid and what is held in stock.
Extend the performance view with receivables, payables and inventory. Read the supporting documents and understand why an outstanding balance today is different from an ageing position at a historical date.
What you explore
- Invoices, payment allocations, partial settlements and remaining AR/AP balances.
- Current and overdue ageing bands using the selected reporting date.
- Opening stock + receipts − deliveries = closing quantity; reconciling value to the ledger.
- Profit versus cash movement, and period flows versus closing balances.
Explain the remaining customer and supplier balances from the transaction case, then review invoice-level ageing in the reference report.
Your checkpointDistinguish the live report’s current residuals from the workbook report’s historical month-end ageing. Do not present one as the other.
05BUDGETING & PERFORMANCE ANALYSISExplain the variance behind the headline
Separate activity levels from price, cost and spending decisions.
Explain the variance behind the headline
Separate activity levels from price, cost and spending decisions.
Use Excel-based planning exercises alongside the Power BI report to connect assumptions with financial results. Make each comparison meaningful by matching the period, entity and level of detail.
What you explore
- Sales volume and price, workforce costs, operating expense drivers and assumption ownership.
- Incremental, zero-based and driver-based budgeting: selecting a method for the question.
- Fixed versus flexible budgets, favourable/adverse conventions and variance bridges.
- Separating a measured difference from an untested explanation of its cause.
Explain the case study’s AUD 225 adverse profit variance using volume, selling price and operating expenses.
Your checkpointMake the bridge add back to the total variance, state the budget used, and support a business recommendation with evidence.
06INTERCOMPANY & CONSOLIDATIONMove from individual companies to a group view
Follow both sides of an internal transaction.
Move from individual companies to a group view
Follow both sides of an internal transaction.
Work with four fictional operating entities and a separate consolidation member. Trace an intercompany service invoice, its settlement and the group adjustments that remove internal activity.
What you explore
- Seller revenue and due-from balances; buyer expenses and due-to balances.
- Matched invoices, partial payments and the outstanding balance over time.
- Eliminating internal revenue, expense, receivables and payables with an audit trail.
- Entity-only, pre-elimination, adjustment-only and consolidated reporting scopes.
Trace one intercompany invoice from the two operating ledgers to E05 consolidation adjustments.
Your checkpointExplain why settlement does not create revenue again, and why applying all group eliminations to only part of the group can produce an invalid result.
07TIME INTELLIGENCE & PLANNING AHEADPut performance in the right period
Compare complete periods and separate actuals from assumptions.
Put performance in the right period
Compare complete periods and separate actuals from assumptions.
Build confidence in month-to-date and year-to-date reporting, then explore what a latest estimate or a future scenario means. The training case uses a January–December financial year.
What you explore
- MTD/YTD controls, the January reset, entity filters and complete-month budget comparisons.
- Why stock and headcount snapshots should not be summed across months like revenue.
- Actual/forecast cutover and the difference between a full-year latest estimate and a rolling horizon.
- Future-period assumptions, scenario labels and version records in planning exercises.
Test January and September reporting windows; create a separate future-assumption exercise while leaving closed actuals unchanged.
Your checkpointIdentify the selected period and forecast version. Explain why a partly completed month should not be treated as a full-month budget result.
08VALIDATION & FINANCIAL STORYTELLINGPresent the insight and defend the numbers
Bring the accounting, model and business explanation together.
Present the insight and defend the numbers
Bring the accounting, model and business explanation together.
Complete a practical finance reporting capstone. Present the result, explain the material movements, show the supporting detail and recommend an action with its assumptions made clear.
What you explore
- Refresh verification, source-to-report reconciliation and exception review.
- Entity and period tests, exact-value checks and readable management visuals.
- Concise commentary: what changed, which drivers explain it, what needs investigation and what action follows.
- Documenting the model, decisions and unresolved questions for another user.
Present a group and entity performance view, explain two budget variances, and demonstrate one transaction’s complete audit trail.
Your checkpointSubmit the learner report and evidence log. Demonstrate that the figures refresh, reconcile and support the conclusion you are presenting.
A worked training exampleFollow a purchase and sale through to profit and cash.
INSIDE THE COURSE
A transaction you can follow.
A result you can explain.
One product. One purchase and sale cycle. Explore how quantities, profit, outstanding balances and cash connect.
FICTIONAL TRAINING CASE · AUDBased on the course’s completed Odoo exercise. Figures are exercise movements, not total company balances.
PURCHASE → RECEIPT → SUPPLIER BILL
01 / 05What did the business buy?
Follow an order for 100 units at AUD 24.50 each. Check the receipt and the posted supplier bill; each document answers a different question.
Under this exercise’s periodic inventory method, the bill debits COGS and credits accounts payable by $2,450. A closing-stock adjustment follows later.
Has the business only ordered the goods, received them, or also recorded the supplier liability?
Check the links between the order, receipt, bill and journal before drawing a conclusion.
Profit is $850.
Cash increased by $300.
The difference is explained by customer and supplier balances and the stock still held. The point of the exercise is to trace that explanation all the way back to the documents.
Learn to build this viewThe exercise excludes tax and uses a specified periodic inventory method. Its closing adjustment must not be duplicated in a setup that already recognises inventory costs automatically. The illustrative lab budget is separate from the historical company budget.
A FEW PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
Know what to expect.
The detailed delivery plan is agreed around the selected learning path and your starting point.
Is this a Power BI course or a finance course?
It connects both. Power BI, Power Query and DAX are taught through finance questions: how a transaction reaches the ledger, how a P&L reconciles, why profit differs from cash and what explains a budget variance.
What role does Excel play?
Excel is used for planning assumptions, budget drivers, reconciliation and supporting exercises. Power Query makes the preparation repeatable, and Power BI brings the model and reporting together.
Will I work with real business data?
The standard exercises use fictional companies and synthetic financial data designed to demonstrate business situations. Your organisation’s data would only be used as part of a separately agreed scope and access arrangement.
Do the forecasts and ageing views use the same sources?
The training distinguishes them. The connected Odoo report covers posted ledger activity and current open balances. Workbook reference reports support historical ageing, budgets and the supplied latest estimate. Extended scenarios are separate learning exercises, with their assumptions stated.
How long is the training, and what does it cost?
The full programme is 30 hours of live online training: 15 sessions of 2 hours each, delivered in English. Contact us for the start date, class days and times, and current fees before booking.
Can we focus on a smaller part of the journey?
Yes—enquire about a focused scope such as finance reporting in Power BI, Excel budgeting, data preparation or variance analysis. We will agree the prerequisites and outcomes before confirming the training.
